Position:Two Intern/Co-op positions are available for Bio-Research Engineers or related disciplines to develop algae bioreactors and processes to grow algae for biodiesel production.

General Description:
Through a collaborative agreement, the Ohio Aerospace Institute
(OAI) is offering two internship positions with its partner, Phycal, Inc. who is developing and commercializing alternative biofuel technologies for the growth and extraction of oil from algae. Once extracted, this algal oil can be refined into biodiesel and other bio-hydrocarbons. Our work is a strategic blend of patented microbiology and engineering.

Selected students will lead investigations on the development of various aspects of the algae to oil process for maximum oil production. This may include: bioreactor equipment; optimization of heat, light, and nutrient levels; process for separation of algae from water; and oil extraction processes. The end product will be a working prototype system which can be placed outdoors to produce and harvest aglal oil.

The successful candidate will have a general chemistry background including organic and physical chemistry. They will posses an interest in laboratory work and customer interface. They will have the opportunity to work with a project leader chemist on assignments including new product development/modification, introducing new products or troubleshooting at customer location.

Description of Training Program:

  • Assignment directly to a technical group at plant location or R&D. Those assigned to R&D will be transferred to a plant within a year. Those assigned to a plant will spend some time during the first year at R & D.
  • Individual will participate in a plant orientation to become familiar with all operating units.
  • Additional time is then spent in specific production areas to better learn raw material, in-process and finished goods specifications.
  • Job assignments will be selected to provide broad understanding of coatings technology, synthesis labs, physical chemistry, etc.
  • Supplemental training by in-company and outside-company management and technical seminars.

Degrees Considered:
  • BS degree in Chemistry

  • Candidates should have demonstrated leadership skills and be highly self-motivated individuals.
  • Students must have a GPA of at least 2.8 and be authorized to work permanently in the United States.

    Technical Sales Trainee
    We also offer opportunities for Chemists interested in Technical Sales. A sales representative is responsible for management of his/her accounts including scheduled visits, sales volume and safety training. Sales representatives are supported by technical and customer service personnel. Opportunities exist to move into sales management, product and market management and/or Customer Service. Candidates in these positions should be interested in working in a sales career in a manufacturing environment.

    Three-month summer internships are being offered for high potential Chemistry students looking for research and development experience or experience working in plant environment. The intern program provides employment the summer before the candidate’s junior or senior year. During this work period, interns can look forward to assuming real responsibilities in real jobs. We regard interns as professionals rather than students and give them challenging assignments to provide exposure to various career opportunities within their disciplines. Interns will learn to plan, organize and direct project work by enlisting sound technical and business practices. Specific job duties will vary by location and business unit.

    Position Description
    We are looking for several Interns that will be assigned to a technical project team in the summer of 2011. Interns will have an opportunity to work in a lab setting and be provided real world research and development product applications. Interns will be responsible for contributing to successful scale-up & implementation of new & reformulated products from the laboratory to manufacturing. Interns will have the opportunity in assisting in identifying unique or plant-specific limitations as well as providing support and ensuring completion of assigned architectural product development projects including formulation and performance testing.

    Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) Opportunities

    The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is recruiting students to participate in our Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) starting in the summer of 2011. We plan to fill positions in the Soil Conservation, Soil Science, and Engineering series. The positions are available in multiple locations across the State.

    This program will allow students that are selected to receive on-the-job training while attending an accredited college or university. Participants are expected to work full-time during summer vacation periods each summer until graduation.

    WVU Center for Neuroscience SURI Program

    The West Virginia University Center for Neuroscience continues to cultivate the next generation of neuroscientists with an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in our 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Internship (SURI) program. Accepted students will gain invaluable experience as they study and work in high-tech facilities across 40 laboratories housed in modern research facilities.

    SCI scholars: Chemistry/ChemE internships

    We are pleased to announce the second year of the summer internship program, SCI Scholars, for chemistry and chemical engineering undergraduates.

    The program is a joint effort of the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) America International Group (AIG), the American Chemical Society (ACS), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and was developed to introduce chemistry and chemical engineering students to careers in the chemical industry.

    Exceptional sophomores and juniors with a GPA of at least 3.5 and who are majoring in chemistry or chemical engineering are encouraged to apply.

    Program details:

    • Over twenty scholars will be chosen for internship positions in the summer of 2011.
    • SCI Scholars receive $6,000-$10,000 for a ten-week internship.
    • Students will be awarded a certificate and an additional $1,000, which can be used for any purpose, such as participation at an ACS or AIChE meeting.
    • Scholars nominate a high school chemistry teacher for recognition. Teachers will be awarded a certificate from SCI and $1,000, which can be used for professional development or classroom materials.
    • Applications are due December 15, 2010.
