REU at University of Buffalo
I am writing to ask you to encourage your students to apply to the University at Buffalo’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program funded by the National Science Foundation. This will be the sixth summer that this program is hosted by the chemistry department at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. Our NSF-REU program will offer a ten-week experience for nine undergraduates and will start on May 30 and end on August 5, 2011.
Students participating in the REU will conduct research in laboratories on projects ranging from traditional areas in chemistry to multidisciplinary projects that involve collaboration between two groups. In addition, students will participate in field trips to research and development laboratories in the chemical and biomedical industry in Western New York. Seminars on career choices and graduate school, research ethics, research presentations, and selected research topics will also be offered.
Stipends are $4,300 and students will receive free housing on campus. Social activities on the weekends will be organized including picnics, sports and trips to Niagara Falls. We will also coordinate activities with other undergraduate groups on campus this summer including a program in ecosystem restoration (ERIE REU).
We welcome applications from students at all levels of study in chemistry and in other science and engineering fields. Please bring this opportunity to the attention of all qualified students, especially students from groups who are underrepresented in the sciences. Students should apply at: www.chemreu.buffalo.edu. We will be accepting applications from January 5 to April 1, 2011. Thank you for your help and please contact me if you have questions about the program.
