The Van Andel Research Institute, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, conducts biomedical research with an emphasis on translating scientific results into clinical applications. The Van Andel Institute Graduate School trains Ph.D. scientists to be leading scholars in cellular, molecular and genetic studies relevant to human diseases. Our innovative problem-based curriculum leads students to explore fundamental concepts in genetics, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology through highly integrated courses based on current research questions. Thesis research is conducted in state-of-the-art laboratories within a beautiful, award-winning building. Other components of our program help develop the professional skills needed in future research leaders.

For the entering class of Fall 2012, we seek effective independent learners who work capably in a collegial team environment. A solid foundation in cell biology, molecular biology and genetics will be important but more essential is an understanding of and passion for the life of a scientist, and the exploration of cutting-edge scientific questions. Those with a bold and pioneering spirit will make the most of this opportunity.

My name is Christopher Hrvoj, and I am the current Director of Public Relations at The Journal of Young Investigators (http://www.jyi.org), the premier science journal for undergraduates. Featured in Nature, The New York Times, and Science, JYI aims to promote undergraduate science research through monthly publications of scientific research manuscripts, features and news articles, and information pertinent to careers in science. Since 1997, JYI has published over 500 research and features articles written by undergraduates, and reviewed by members of our staff, who currently represent over 50 academic institutions from six countries. I am writing to make you aware of several exciting educational opportunities for undergraduates offered by JYI in the fields of scientific publication, science writing, and mentoring. We deeply appreciate your dedication to the sciences and hope that you will take advantage of these opportunities to enhance student involvement in research at your institution. Firstly, JYI is currently soliciting submissions of research manuscripts from undergraduates to each of our research departments, which include Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Psychology and Social Sciences. Our editorial staff members carefully review submitted manuscripts for web publication, guiding undergraduates through an editing and publication process to which few of them would otherwise be exposed. Undergraduates who have composed senior honors theses and summer research papers in particular stand to benefit from such evaluation, and we encourage you to suggest publication with JYI as a possibility to such outstanding students. JYI is also currently providing undergraduates with the opportunity to serve as staff members within our organization. Students interested in joining our staff are encouraged to submit applications for the positions listed below. All JYI staff members contribute their time on an unpaid basis, so a strong passion for promoting scientific research is necessary in all applicants. For more information on joining our journal's staff, please visit http://www.jyi.org/participate.php. We are currently actively seeking candidates for the following positions: General Staff (average commitment of 3-5 hours/week) Science Journalist News and Feature Editor Research Associate Editor Career Researcher Human Resources Officer Graphic Artist Programmer Executive Board (average commitment of 10 hours/week) Director of the Career Center Director of Human Resources Chief Development Officer Chief Technical Officer Senior Research Editor We would be very grateful if you would share these opportunities with your students. If you are interested in doing so, we encourage you to forward this e-mail to your students, or to forward the attached message. We would also appreciate it if you would kindly add a link to www.jyi.org on your department's webpage, as this would be yet another way for students to learn about JYI.
