Softball Team Bonds Down South, Ready To Play Up North...
By Senior Outfielder Lauren Seeds - Pickerington, Ohio
Although we didn’t leave Florida with the record we wanted, our team really came together on this trip. We started off the season strong by winning six out of eight games before the week of our conference tournament.
Many of our underclassmen really stepped up. Sophomore Chelsae Poelking and freshman Mary Kruska are catching for the first time in their careers and they are both doing an incredible job. Katie Svilar, who played outfield as a freshman last year, is also doing a great job adjusting as a third baseman. Freshmen Teddi Jacobson, Anneliese Fetterman, Beth Andrasik, and Lauren Hartman are all contributing at the plate and Alexis Ferrera and Nadia Kapper are adding to an awesome team dynamic.
I don’t think our record after the conference games last week accurately reflects our team’s ability to play. Throughout the entire week, we were falling just short of a few more wins, including games against Brandeis, Wash U., and Rochester, all of which had one or two run differentials. Despite seven straight losses, we were able to improve several aspects of our game with every inning played, and our team almost pulled-off upsets against Rochester and Wash U. who finished at the top of our conference.
Our exceptional win against Emory in the last game of conference play was our tournament highlight. This win shows how much our team pulled together towards the end of the week…especially when considering our 0-9 loss to Emory earlier in the tournament. It’s always tough to come into the first week of the season playing nationally ranked conference teams, and I feel that if we were to play these schools again, we would definitely have a few more wins to bring home. The improvements and adjustments we made within this past week demonstrate the enormous amount of potential our team has for the remainder of the season.
