Soccer Team Heads To Top Rate Soccer Country...

By Freshman Defender/Midfielder Michael Schmid - Oberlin, OH

Man, the past few weeks have been some busy times!!!!

I am part of the Class of 2011, waiting to get our steak dinners that we deserve after winning and breaking the 26-mile course record at the Hudson Relays, while procrastinating on many long term papers that are due during the finals. The long hours of studying for the important, yet long finals in order to get the grades we want, then walking in pouring rain to just take the finals while being soaked.

But after all that, the reward we [well for the soccer team] get for the exhausting work we have done is we get to go to Brazil today! This is definitely worth the wait as it will be a great experience for the whole squad. We can continue with our successful spring training, after beating Denison University 3-0 in four 30-minute periods, in Brazil against Brazilian local clubs. The Brazilian players are known for their flair in soccer moves as they are really quick and can control the ball so smoothly. Brazil won the world’s most popular tournament, the World Cup, five times, the most out of any country. So the players in Brazil most definitely are talented.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the whole team as 2008 is the first year that the Case men’s soccer program is sending a team out of the country. Not many people get the chance to go to another continent, or get out of the country at all. Coach Palmer, the soccer program, team, and others associated with the soccer team put a lot of effort into setting up and funding the trip through families, friends, and fundraisers. Thanks to all those who helped, we would never have this kind of opportunity.

Besides chilling on the beach and enjoying the warm weather, which we are looking forward to, this will definitely bond the team together. We are all in this to have fun as a team, play soccer as a team, and have a learning experience as a team. We have not gotten to Brazil yet, but we are already excited to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Ilha Grande, Sao Bento do Saupica, and Gauruja. This trip will definitely be a team bonding experience.
