Baumann In Boston With Women's Soccer...

By Sophomore Midfielder Amy Baumann (Dublin, OH)

This past weekend the women’s varsity soccer team traveled to Boston, Massachusetts to play Brandeis University. Although we have traveled many times this season, this was our first time flying to a game. We flew out of the Akron-Canton airport and arrived in Boston on Friday afternoon. From the airport we went to the famous Faneuil Hall where we could shop and eat dinner. There was an awesome outdoor market with fresh fruits and vegetables as well as an outdoor shopping mall with many name-brand stores. Also, there were lots of people performing small bits of entertainment – like a juggler, a man making balloon figures, a street band, and a magician. One of our freshmen, Kristina Vaci, was selected to assist the magician in one of his more-awkward acts.

A few of my teammates and I then went to a famous restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was called Dick’s Last Resort and has even been publicized on the food network. The wait staff is purposely mean toward its customers. Our menus, placemats, and silverware were thrown at us and any questions were answered with anger or annoyance. Our waitress made hats with funny sayings on them for everyone at the table and other waiters tied balloons into their customers’ hair. But the fresh seafood was good and the environment was funny so we definitely had a great time.

After dinner, we walked to the Boston Harbor to sit and talk for awhile. The Harbor was beautiful at night – the lights reflecting on the water and the boats created an awesome scene. The overall atmosphere of Faneuil Hall was amazing and we all had a lot of fun spending time there.

After spending time in Boston, we went back to the hotel to relax and get ready for our game. I got to room with another freshman, Laura Gabster. After a good night’s sleep we went to Panera for breakfast then headed over to the field on Brandeis’s campus. The weather was perfect for soccer: sunny and warm with a light breeze. The game started off a little frantic, but we regained our composure and got to half-time with a score of 0-0.

The second half started off poorly, however, when Brandeis scored off a corner kick less than three minutes in. They would go on to score three more goals in the half. Unfortunately, the score did not accurately reflect our level of ability. It was an extremely disappointing game and I, along with everyone else on the team, am eager to get back on the field and play again. Hopefully this game will serve as a turning point for us this season and we can finish strong in our conference. Next weekend the team will travel to Atlanta and then to Pittsburgh to play Emory University and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively.
